I've learned two very important lessons this week.
1. You'd think I would have learned this lesson after Andrew colored all over the wall, but I guess it didn't quite stick. DON'T LEAVE YOUR TODDLER ALONE WITH CRAYONS! It just goes bad places.
Andrew was coloring in his Thomas coloring book (or so I thought) while I was doing the dishes. I could see him, it's not like we were in different rooms or anything. But somehow I missed the fact that he colored all over our (relatively) new LCD monitor. Not only did I freak out, but I was picturing John's reaction....yikes! Thank goodness for the internet though, I did a search and discovered that you can remove crayon (and supposedly permanent marker) from a screen using a rubber eraser. It worked amazingly well! And then I just took a screen wipe and cleaned off the eraser residue. Hallelujah!
2. Never let your toddler anywhere near a CD player.
Andrew and I were sitting in our parked car, eating our lunches. Andrew had a kids meal, but was more occupied with playing. I was trying to clean up and somehow missed it (even though he was sitting right next to me!) when he took the plastic pirate coins from his kids meal and shoved them into the car's CD player. Yikes. I still haven't gotten the coins out, and every time we turn on the car the CD player makes this really horrible sound because it's trying to play the coins. This was definitely worse than the colored on computer screen. We're not sure how to fix it without spending money we don't have.
*sigh*
I guess the real lesson here is that you should never, ever--even for a second--stop paying attention to a toddler.
My bad.

Tag
Maren was kind enough to remind me that I'm supposed to tag three people, so I'm gonna say Maren, Emily, and Erin.

I've been tagged...

Well, this is a first! I've been tagged by Lindsey, so here goes.
10 years ago... Ten years ago I was 14 and finishing my freshman year of high school (I'm not sure whether or not that makes me feel old or young). I was looooving high school and had an awesome group of friends. I also had my first major crush, but I'm not going to name names. :) It was also somewhere around this time that my family took our first trip to Europe--England and Scotland, to be specific. The above picture is of me and Maren at Hadrian's Wall.
5 Things on my To-Do List Today...
1. Dishes
2. Thank you cards
3. Laundry
4. Clean bedroom
5. Go to bed early (seriously, this really is on my list....I'm sooooooo tired)
5 Snacks I Enjoy...
1. Oreos
2. Candy (Twix, Crunch, M&Ms are favorites)
3. Dr. Pepper
4. Homemade cookies (chocolate chip, peanut butter chocolate chip, chocolate with white chocolate chip, sugar cookies, the list goes on and on)
5. Cheese
5 Places I Have Lived
1. Poway, CA (I love Poway!)
2. Denton, TX
3. Mira Mesa, CA
4. Penasquitos, CA
5. Provo, UT
5 Jobs I've Had
1. Mom (definitely the hardest)
2. Research Assistant (Joseph Smith Papers Project @ BYU)
3. Sales Associate (Gap)
4. BYU Student Financial Services (I can't for the life of me remember what my title was)
5. Cashier (Target)
5 Things People Don't Know About Me...
1. I have scoliosis (not to copy Lindsey or anything :). It's a minor case of it, so I've never had to do anything about it.
2. I haaaaaate 80s music. Yuck!
3. I am completely incapable of keeping track of time. I go to the store for five things and come home two hours later, shocked that it's already as late as it is.
4. I love America's Next Top Model--it's definitely my guilty pleasure.
5. I'm terrified of being called to teach any sort of group of adults in church. Primary was fine, but if they called me to teach Gospel Doctrine or something, I think I would die. I find this odd, considering the fact that I always wanted to be a teacher.

The Pie Maker
Last night as I was making John's celebratory Cherry Granola Pie, I began to envision myself as being our family's version of Ned the pie maker (how we miss Pushing Daisies!!!). This was one of the most beautiful pies I've ever made (and I've made quite a few!) and I felt like I was almost as good of a pie maker as Ned. Sadly, after I took it out of the oven it did not look nearly as nice.

John says it still tastes great, though I wouldn't know. Like Ned, I too never eat my own pies, though my reasoning is very different; the fruit in my pies doesn't turn rotten if I touch it again, I simply just don't like fruit.
So the reason John gets this celebratory pie is because he took his MPA comprehensive exam on Saturday and we're excited to have it out of the way. This comp exam is the program's equivalent of a master's thesis. John of course is worrying about whether or not he passed, which is just silly. That is why this is a celebratory pie, not a congratulatory pie. He'll get one of those when we get the test results. :)

President Hinckley
I just found out that our LDS church President Gordon B. Hinckley passed away. It seems so weird to think that the church will have a new leader. President Hinckley has been prophet for a large part of my life, I don't truly remember anyone before him. And yet I'm happy that he gets to be with his wife again. He was an amazing prophet who did so much for the church and I know he'll be missed.
Here's a good article about him: President Gordon B. Hinckley dies at age 97

I've caved....
Hello blogging world! We've finally caved. I've been contemplating jumping on this bandwagon for awhile, but John kept talking me out of it because we have Andrew's website already. I know it's hard to imagine, but I can talk about stuff besides Andrew. Really. Anyway, when I saw that Maren and Scott had started blogging, I knew it was time. I can't let them be cooler than me! So here we are.
Upon trying to select a url for our blog, I discovered there was already a johnandkara blog. How dare someone steal our name! I contemplated using texasnelsens or something like that, but I think it would be misspelled a lot. Sigh.
Well, I'm guessing I'm already boring people and it's only my first post. Adios!
